Mrs. John Grondahl, Lowry Pioneer, is Buried Saturday
Mrs. Martina Grondahl, well-known pioneer of the Lowry vicinity, passed away, Monday, Sept. 27, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Alexandria following a lingering illness.
Martina Halvorson was born July 27, 1861 at Trysil, Norway, and was 87 years of age at the time of her death.
She emigrated to America in 1885, coming to Douglas county, Minnesota, where she made her home since.
On Dec. 6, 1885, at St. Pauli church at Lowry, she was married to John Grondahl, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Grondahl was a charter member of the Trysil Lutheran church and was the oldest living member at the time of her death.
For the past ten years she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Broms. She had a large number of friends both among the older people as well as the young folks.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Broms ( Inga ) of Alexandria and Mrs. F.S. Fleming ( Hilda ) of Portland, Oregon, and four sons, Emil, Engvald and Peter of Alexandria, and David of Lowry, five grandchildren, as well as many other relatives. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter and two sons.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Trysil Lutheran church at three o’clock PM, with Rev. Morris Ulring officiating. Priscilla and Martin Myhr sang in Norwegian “Shall We Meet There” and Mrs. Clifford Peterson sang “Rock of Ages”.
Pallbearers were Martin Grondahl, Henry Grondahl, Emil Gulbranson, Oscar Peterson, Christ Steen and Carl Lordalen. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
