Julian Oliver Nygaard, the son of Oscar J. and Olive S. (Christianson) Nygaard, was born at home on February 7, 1921 near Farwell. He grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at the Trysil Lutheran Church and attended country school in District #27. Julian entered active duty in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines and also Korea during World War II. Julian was joined in marriage to Arline Olson on April 9, 1949, in Farwell. They farmed near Lowry for a short time before moving to his family’s home place in the early 1950s. In 1983 they sold the farm to their son Darwin and continued to live near the farm for the next several years. He retired from farming in 1992 and moved into Lowry.
Julian loved to go fishing, hunting and attending auctions and threshing bees. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was always thinking of ways to “tease” and always had a good reserve of Tootsie Rolls. Julian always looked forward to going out for coffee during his retirement years and going out for pie with Arline.
Julian is survived by his wife: Arline of Starbuck; three children: Anndalin “Ann” and husband James Drews of Lowry; Theresa and husband John Lanigan of Glenwood; Darwin and wife Debbie Nygaard of Farwell; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five sisters: Cora Whitaker of Starbuck; Edith Anderson of Park Rapids; Sylvia Haabala of Farwell; Pamela and husband Orvis Berg of Osceola, Wisconsin; Adeline and husband Herbert Berg of Alexandria; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson: Jeremy Lanigan.
Casketbearers were Julian’s grandsons: Troy, Corey, Jamie and Jason Drews; Jessie and Justin Lanigan; and Adam and Matthew Nygaard. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters: Tami Drewes Barnes, Jodi Lanigan and Kelly Nygaard.
Arrangements were with the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood.
