Martin Sogaarden, a son of Ole and Oline Sogaarden, was born Sept 19,
1866, in Trysil, Osterdalen, Norway. When 2 1/2 years old he came to
America with his parents, who emigrated in 1969. Coming to Douglas
county, they settled four miles south of Holmes City, where they took up
a homestead which has ever since been the family home.
Martin was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Norway and confirmed here
in Trysil church by Rev Gustav Oftedal. He was brought up in a
Christian home.
From Martin’s early boyhood days he helped his parents in providing
the necessities of life. He was very dependable and honest in all his
dealings. He had good health and was very active and prosperous in his
chosen occupation. He loved his home and surroundings; one would seldom miss finding him there.
His long companionship with his brother Peter was outstanding and of a
very intimate and mutual nature.
Martin was a member of Trysil congregation from its early beginning.
The last several years he was unable to attend the services due to an
ailment which made it very difficult for him to walk.
After living at the home place for 75 years, Martin was suddenly
called away May 9, 1944, at 8:25 in the morning. His death was due to a
heart attack. He was 77 years, 7 months and 20 days old.
Besides his parents, two brothers and three sisters have preceded him
in death, namely, Albert, Olaf, Lillie (Mrs O Finstad), Julia (Mrs C
Jacobson) and Helen (Mrs E S Solheim).
Those who survive him are his only brother, Peter, at the home place
and four sisters, Christine Helseth, Minneapolis, Olive Femrite, Lowry,
Bertha Reece, Farwell, and Marie Finstad, Minneapolis. He is also
survived by a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
